If the Madrid ever needs repair, we repair it. Free. For as long as you own it. Not for a year, and not only for manufacturing defects: a handle that loosens in year four, a corner that scuffs through in year six, a clasp that stops turning. Send the bag back to the workshop in Ubrique that made it, and it comes back repaired.

To start a repair, email care@themaisonaurelle.com with your order number or the number on the card that came in the box, and a photo of the damage. We send instructions and a label.

We can afford this promise because the bag is built so that it rarely needs it: 1.4 mm full-grain calfskin, saddle-stitched handles and corners, solid brass hardware. How it is made is on the Made in Ubrique page.

Keep it dry. Full-grain calfskin handles light rain; it does not like being soaked. If it gets wet, blot with a dry cloth and let it dry at room temperature, away from a radiator or direct sun. Never use a hairdryer.

Wipe, don't scrub. A soft, dry cloth takes off dust and most marks. For anything more, a barely damp cloth with plain water, then dry. Avoid household cleaners, wipes and alcohol: they strip the finish.

Let the patina come. The leather is not coated, so it will deepen in colour where your hands touch it and soften at the handles over the first months. That is the hide ageing, not wear.

Mind the hardware. The turn-lock and padlock are solid brass with an 18-micron gold finish. Wipe fingerprints with a dry cloth. Do not polish with metal cleaners; the finish does not need it and they can dull it.

The Madrid stands on its own, empty or full. To keep it that way between carries: empty it, stuff it lightly with the tissue it came in or plain acid-free paper (not newspaper, which transfers ink), fasten the turn-lock, and put it in the unbleached cotton dust bag that shipped with it. Store it upright on a shelf, not hanging by the handles, and away from sunlight and heat.

Do not store it in plastic. Leather needs to breathe, and a sealed bag traps moisture.

You have 30 days from delivery to decide the Madrid is the finest bag you own. If it is not, send it back unused, in its dust bag and box with its numbered card, and we refund it in full and pay the shipping both ways. Monogrammed bags are made to order and cannot be returned.
